3 Tips To Last Longer in Multi-Table Tournaments
This was published 20-02-2008Lasting out the competition in Multi-Table Tournaments can be a difficult thing. With many novice players constantly going all-in early in the tournament you will need to be very careful which hands you play.
One of the keys to doing well in online poker Multi-Table Tournaments (MTT’s) is to outlast the competition in the early stages so that all the bad players get knocked out early.
Here are 3 good tips that you can follow to last longer in online poker MTT’s:
1) Only play premium hands early (such as AK, AA, KK, QQ, JJ, Ax (x=K/Q/J/T Suited) and raise at least 5 times the big blind when you get these hands. By playing tight-aggressive it means you will only get involved in bigger pots that are worth winning, and you will always enter these hands in good position. Don’t be afraid to fold after the flop if you miss completely though.
2) Take your mind off the game – MTT’s are BORING! Unless you are playing a few at once, chances are you will eventually get bored, lose your patience and want to go all-in. Don’t do that! Read a book (preferably on MTT strategy – Harrington on Hold’em is a really good one), listen to music, or anything else just to keep your mind from getting bored waiting for premium poker hands.
3) Take educated risks and avoid those where you are a dog. If a guy with a chip stack 4 times yours pushes you all-in, unless you have a really strong hand you will probably have to fold. Because if you call and he gets lucky, then you are out of the tournament. On the other hand, if you have 4 times the chip stack of another player and you have a lot of outs early in a hand (ie. after the flop), don’t be afraid to take some chances to eliminate a player, and add some chips to your stack!
Good luck at the poker tables!
